Summer Schubertiade

July 16:  Summer Schubertiade

A Schubertiade is a concert celebrating the songs, chamber music, and influence of the German/Austrian composer Franz Schubert. Few had a greater impact on the Romantic art song of the 19th century and this program features several of those masterpieces along with the counterpart works of chamber music based on the same material.

Julius Schmid: Schubertiade (1854)

About this program

Trockne Blumen

Trockne Blumen (Dry flowers) is a song from the cycle Die schöne Müllerin (1824). In this song, the narrator imagines taking the now withered flowers from the miller’s daughter to his grave so that they may spring forth once more and prove that his love was true. The program features this song along with Schubert’s Introduction and Variations on this theme for flute and strings.

Die Forelle

Die Forelle (The Trout) and maybe one of Schubert’s best know tunes; heard in popular culture and even some Samsung washing machines!

The program features the famous lieder along with the fourth movement of the Trout Quintet with a new set of variations from around the world.

Der tod und das mädchen

Der tod und das mädchen (Death and the Maiden) is another popular art song, both within Schubert’s time and today. This incredible and dark art song is followed by the string quartet that incorporates it as a set of variations.

Der Wanderer

Der Wanderer (The Wanderer), is a work most commonly known in Schubert’s fantasy for solo piano based on the theme. This program features a string nonet version of that work along with the original art song.
